Republican Senator Rick Scott has proposed invoking the 25th Amendment to remove President Joe Biden from office amid the Afghanistan crisis.

The Florida lawmaker called into question Biden's mental competency in a tweet on Monday.

'After the disastrous events in Afghanistan, we must confront a serious question: Is Joe Biden capable of discharging the duties of his office or has time come to exercise the provisions of the 25th Amendment?' he wrote.

The 25th Amendment, which has never been used, would require vice president Kamala Harris and members of the president’s Cabinet to determine Biden is no longer fit for office.

Congress would then need to approve that process by a two-thirds vote in both chambers and vice president Harris would become president.

Scott's echoes recent statements from former President Donald Trump, who has said Biden should step down after the Taliban took control of Afghanistan following the withdrawal of US troops.

The Taliban was able to almost immediately take over Afghanistan, faster than even the Biden administration said it had anticipated.

Biden deployed thousands of US troops back to Afghanistan to provide security for US citizens and allies trying to escape the country as much of the world watched shocking images of desperate Afghans clinging to a US military jet at Kabul's international airport.

On Monday, Biden addressed the nation from the White House and held firm on his decision to end the US war in Afghanistan.

'I will not repeat the mistakes we've made in the past — mistake of staying and fighting indefinitely in a conflict that is not in the national interest of the United States, of doubling down on a civil war in a foreign country, he said.

Criticism of Biden's handling of the exit mounted after global commentators and liberal media have branded his rush exit 'shameful' and a 'stain on our nation's integrity'.

Critics say the president's decision to wind down America's longest conflict has undone 20 years of work and sacrifice. His handling of the exit has paved the way for a humanitarian catastrophe and called US credibility into question.

While Republican senators have blasted Biden, Scott is the only GOP senator to bring up invoking the 25th Amendment.

The last time the measure was brought up was in regards to removing former president Trump from office after he incited his followers to storm the Capitol on January 6.

Former vice president Pence considered invoking the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office due to his unstable behavior in the days after the riots, but it never came to that.

Following the fall of Kabul into the hands of the militants on Sunday, footage of Biden repeatedly claiming a takeover was 'not inevitable' re-emerged.

The video has further fuelled criticism of the Administration and Biden's judgment as commander-in-chief is being called into question.

He said he did not regret his decision to remove all US troops from Afghanistan, despite mounting concerns of Taliban insurgents reclaiming powers.
