A California father and daughter were brutally stabbed to death in a shopping center parking lot on Thursday. The two were attacked by a man in broad daylight while working on their vehicle.

According to the Los Angeles Times, 54-year-old Ken Evans and 22-year-old McKenna Evans were fatally stabbed in a parking lot in Palmdale, California, around 11:52 a.m. on Thursday.

Law enforcement was called to the scene "regarding an assault with a deadly weapon."

Police reported that a male suspect approached Ken Evans and asked him for assistance with his vehicle. The two got into an argument that led to a physical altercation. The suspect then stabbed and killed Ken and McKenna Evans.

McKenna Evans died at the scene, and Ken Evans died after being transported to the local hospital.

The suspect was arrested, but no murder weapon was recovered.

All parties involved appeared to be living in their vehicles, authorities stated. The suspect's name has not been released.

Elizabeth Evans, the wife of Ken Evans and mother of McKenna Evans, told KTLA that she believes the attack was random and that the suspect might have been on drugs.

"When he was in handcuffs, he smirked," Elizabeth Evans told KABC-TV. "He had a smirk on his face. How dare he? I hope he never gets out of prison."

Elizabeth Evans explained that her husband and daughter were spending quality time together before her husband moved out of state. She described Ken Evans as a "doting father" who "loved spending as much time as he could with his daughter."

"She wasn't just my daughter, she was my best friend," Elizabeth Evans said.

Fox News reported that in a Facebook post believed to be written by McKenna Evans days before the attack, she wrote, "Hey guys, a lot of things are going on right now, things that are leaving me stressed and scared, and I could really use some prayers," and added, "My family still needs to find a home but our case worker hasn't been much help."

The investigation is still ongoing as detectives examine the details that led up to the attack and determine a possible motive. The suspect is expected to face murder charges.
