A former Google employee has gone viral with a TikTok video after he revealed the 'true purpose' of the free office perks.

Ken Waks, 29, who was based in Google's lavish corporate headquarters at the Googleplex in Mountain View, California, said the perks are a tool to make people 'work more for less.'

Ken, who grew up in New Jersey, described the range of benefits including free meals, coffee, transport and dog friendly offices, as being designed to keep employees in the office for as long as possible.

The TikTok went viral and gained over 6.4 million views and plenty of reactions.

He started off the video by saying: 'Companies like Google and known for their amazing perks right? But what if I told you, there's a dark reason those companies do that. To get you to work more for less.'

'At Google you get three square meals a day, for free. But dinner would start at 6 or 6:30, so you had to stay late working more to get the free food.

'My favourite part was the free shuttles. They would start at 6am in the morning and they would run home until 10pm at night. They had wifi on them so you would work while on the shuttle.'

'I loved that you could bring your dog to the office and the offices were dog friendly. But in reality, they did that so you would not leave the office to go take care of your dog.'

Ken, who quit Google twice and went onto work for Yelp, continued: 'When I worked at Yelp there were baristas to make coffee for you and there were tons of snacks.

'I asked my director: "Why don't I earn commission until after I earn $12,000 of sales each month?".

'And he told me, "That's when we break even on you for the office snacks and perks that we give you".'

He said: 'I would rather not have those perks and have a higher salary.' However his boss explained that's not how 'it works'.

The TikToker went on to say because the company takes care of all the employee's needs, they want to keep you working harder and for longer.

One user commented: 'I see no darkness to any of those perks. If a company was taking care of me that well, I would not have a problem working longer hours to do my job.'

While another said: 'How can you complain about those “perks” try working in healthcare or in retail or the food industry go check out there perks. Oo yeah it’s Covid.'

While other found it a bit petty, with one writing: 'Bro if these things are “dark” to you it’s obvious you’ve had a silver spoon all of your life.'
