At least five people have been rushed to hospital - and a worker was trapped - after a five story building under construction completely collapsed in Washington DC.

The collapse happened around 3:30pm EST in the city's Brightwood Park neighborhood.

A local Twitter feed that scans emergency services radio reported that five had been rushed to hospital, and that one person was trapped in the rubble. Rescuers freed the trapped individual, who officials identified as an adult male who is listed as conscious.

A local news crew filmed the moment the man was pulled from the wreckage and wheeled into a waiting ambulance. Further updates on his condition have not been shared.

Meanwhile, a second video shared by WUSA reporter Matthew Torres showed a neighbor rushing over to the collapsed building as cries of 'help' came from the rubble.

The Twitter feed also included medical codes as shorthand for the conditions of the freed individuals, writing that there was one transported as one Priority 1, meaning critically injured, two as Priority 2, meaning in less serious condition, and two as Priority 3, meaning little emergency attention is required.

The identities, ages and any further information on the injured have not been released at this time. The cause of the collapse remains a mystery as of now.

The building was a five-story home in a residential neighborhood and fire officials said it was under construction when it fully collapsed. DC Fire and EMS Chief John Donnelly said four other construction workers were pulled out of the rubble after rescuers arrived at the scene and they were all taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Donnelly said firefighters were communicating with the trapped worker and were using saws and other equipment to make their way through the rubble.

City officials said that authorities are still working to determine if proper permits were issued and regulations were being followed. They said it was too early to say whether a storm rolling through may have played any role.

Officials said emergency crews had evacuated two homes next to the collapse.

Video from the scene showed firefighters climbing through debris and planks of wood, working to rescue the trapped person.

The collapse came a week after a condo building collapsed in Surfside, along Miami Beach in Florida. Champlain Towers South crumbled to the ground in the early hours of last Thursday. Recovery crews continue to comb its rubble one week on, with 18 confirmed dead and 145 still missing.
