Tiger Woods thanked his fellow golfers who wore red and black in his honor on Sunday in his first public comments since his horrifying car crash last week.

Woods, tweeting from his hospital bed, said: 'It is hard to explain how touching today was when I turned on the TV and saw all the red shirts.

'To every golfer and every fan, you are truly helping me get through this tough time.'

The 15-time major champion shattered his leg when he lost control of his car, which rolled several hundred feet in an accident police said he was 'lucky to survive.'

Fellow golfers wore his signature outfit on Sunday when Woods, 45, could not participate in the WGC-Workday Championship in Bradenton, Florida.

Woods' mother, Tida, had suggested he wear the outfit when he was younger and he has maintained the image throughout his legendary career.

Tony Finau appeared to make the greatest attention to detail at Concession Golf Club on Sunday, even wearing his Nike hat backward as Woods often arrives at tournaments, ESPN reported.

'I heard earlier quite a few guys were going to do it. I for sure felt like it would just be a nice touch,' Finau said.

'We've enjoyed so many Sundays watching Tiger do his thing. Red and black, that's what Tiger does on Sundays, so to just join in and just let Tiger know we're supporting him in the best way we can.'

Others who wore red at the tournament include Jason Day, Tommy Fleetwood, Cameron Champ, Sebastian Munoz, Rory McIlroy, Patrick Reed, Jon Rahm and Justin Thomas.

'Obviously, there's nothing we can do to help him, but I think just it's important for him to feel some kind of support,'' Thomas told ESPN.

The entire grounds crew wore red for Woods at the Puerto Rico Championship at Grand Reserve Country Club, the opposite-field event, ESPN reported.

Many of the women golfers at Gainbridge LPGA event in Orlando also wore 'Sunday red,' the league tweeted.

Bryson DeChambeau also tweeted a picture of a golf ball with the name 'Tiger' and a red line on it.

'We're pulling for you @tigerwoods. A mentor, idol and role model to my career, there's no one that could come out of this stronger. We are glad you're here. See you soon,' DeChambeau tweeted.
