Democratic presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke claimed over the weekend that Texans who own AR-15s have told him they support his plan for extreme gun control.
"Texans who own AR-15s, they've told me this themselves, 'I don't need this. I don't need it to hunt, I don't need it to protect myself, it was fun to use, I like taking it out to the range, but if giving this back, or cutting it to pieces, or selling it to the government helps to keep us safer, then by all means do it,'" O'Rourke said on MSNBC Saturday.Hey, @BetoORourke, actual Texan here.— Jason Howerton (@jason_howerton) September 14, 2019
I regret to inform you that your request to buy my legally purchased firearms has been denied after your background check revealed a criminal record.
Don’t want to take any chances. Xoxo 😘 https://t.co/GAT1KRh0xy
O'Rourke told the nation last week during the Democratic debate that he supports mandatory confiscation of all AR-15s and another similar semi-automatic firearms.
What was the reaction among Texans?
However, considering that Texans overwhelmingly support Second Amendment rights, not many believed O'Rourke's claims, which he made without corroborating evidence.
Blaze Media's Jason Howerton mockingly responded to O'Rourke, joking that O'Rourke could not take his AR-15 because of his criminal history.
RedState's Brandon Morse called O'Rourke's claim a "Texas sized lie."
Dana Loesch responded with a gif from "Anchorman."
Blaze Media's Chad Prather said:
"I'm from Texas and I'm happy to say nope not giving them up," another Texan responded.
"Real Texans didn't say that," another person said.
"Lmao. Robert continuously making up stories that never happened," another Texan responded.
