Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) had a powerful response for Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) on Fox News Tuesday amid controversy after Ocasio-Cortez claimed the "U.S. is running concentration camps on our southern border."

What's the background?

The back-and-forth between Cheney and Ocasio-Cortez began Tuesday when the Republican lawmaker publicly rebuked her Democratic colleague for invoking the Holocaust to score political points.

"Please @AOC do us all a favor and spend just a few minutes learning some actual history. 6 million Jews were exterminated in the Holocaust. You demean their memory and disgrace yourself with comments like this," Cheney said.

In response, Ocasio-Cortez accused Cheney of "co-opting the language of the oppressor" because she correctly described what happened to the Jewish people in the Holocaust.

Later, while speaking to reporters outside her Capitol Hill office, Ocasio-Cortez blasted Cheney, instructing the elder lawmaker to do her "homework."

"She used the term 'extermination' which is co-opting the language, eh, of that. You know, that term implies that the people who died in the Holocaust, it, it doubles down on the rhetoric that justified it. So, I think it's, uh, I mean I think she's the one that needs to do her homework," Ocasio-Cortez said.

How did Cheney respond?

Speaking on Fox News, Cheney responded to Ocasio-Cortez's "homework" comment. She said that "left-wing zealots ignoring history, ignoring facts" is nothing new to America. What is new, Cheney charged, is that now the "left-wing zealot" is the "intellectual leader" of congressional Democrats.

"Again and again and again we see this total disregard for the facts," Cheney said. "And it's a total disregard for the facts, in particular, about the Holocaust. But also you see the extent to which her colleagues...[and Democratic leadership] won't stand up and criticize what she's saying, and condemn those commands and those statements."

"At some point you run out of ways to describe how ignorant this is," she added. "We should never be in a situation where somebody is bringing up the Holocaust in this public discourse, particularly diminishing what happened, particularly demeaning the state of Israel, demeaning the memory of the people who were lost."

In the end, Cheney said anyone with a "surface-level" understanding of the Holocaust knows that Ocasio-Cortez is fundamentally wrong about comparing the extermination of millions of Jews to the temporary detainment of migrants who willingly journey to the U.S. in search of freedom.

"It was really a shameful set of remarks," Cheney said.

  3. Ocasio-Cortez is a descendent of the people and culture who exterminated and expelled the Jews from the Iberian peninsula only 500 years ago.
