After a 13-year-old Palestinian boy hiding behind parked cars allegedly opened fire on Jews in Jerusalem, shooting a father and son in their upper bodies before he himself was shot and wounded in return gunfire, the Reuters News agency wrote a sympathetic story about the boy, lamenting that he had dreams of “being a chef.”
Reuters has gained a reputation for its anti-Israel reporting, not unlike other major news outlets such as The New York Times. In November, despite clear historical evidence that the Biblical Temples stood on the Temple Mount, Reuters initially reported of the Temple Mount, the holiest place in Judaism, “The site, said to have once housed two ancient Jewish temples . . . ” Last month Reuters identified the ship Mavi Marmara, which had tried to circumvent Israel’s legal blockade of Gaza, as an “aid ship.” “The Mavi Marmara’s passengers were armed with weapons — which they turned against IDF soldiers — not aid,” CAMERA noted.
In the face of the surveillance video that allegedly showed Muhammad Aleiwat, 13, shooting at the Jews, Reuters titled their article “Palestinian Teenager Dreamt of Being A Chef Before Attack, Teachers Say.”
The article started by stating that “Aleiwat was pressing his teachers for the school report he needed so he could go to a Jerusalem college to train as a chef” before continuing, “Three days later, he was lying unconscious in hospital accused of opening fire at a group of Israeli passers-by in Jerusalem’s Silwan district.”
“People who knew Aleiwat are puzzled about what could have prompted him to carry out such an act,” Reuters wrote, claiming that people who knew him said he “had not shown an interest in politics.”
The family of the boy claimed he just “happened to be there and was shot at,” Reuters added.
“We quickly arrived at the scene and saw the victims. They were fully conscious and suffered gunshot wounds to their upper bodies,” paramedic Fadi Dekidak stated, according to Fox News. “We quickly put him in an intensive care unit and evacuated them with life-saving medical treatment to Shaare Zedek Hospital.”
As for the Times, the Jewish Council for Public Affairs researched 107 editorials on Israel and Jews published in The New York Times since 2016; David Bernstein, president and CEO of the organization, accused the Times of “a decided institutional bias” against Israel. Roughly a decade ago, the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting and Analysis (CAMERA) published a pamphlet titled “Indicting Israel: New York Times Coverage of the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict,” that delineated the Times’ consistent bias against Israel.
