Authorities in the Chinese port city of Xiamen were checking every newly captured seafood, from fish and crabs to shrimp to try to stem the spread of the Covid-19 virus.

The outbreak of COVID at a Hainan Island fish market prompted the order from CCP authorities in Xiamen.

According to the city’s fishery supervisor, PCR testing must be conducted on all fishermen and their catch upon their return to Xiamen, a popular tourist city in the southeastern Chinese province of Fujian.

“We test humans as well as what they caught at the same time – sample tests for the same batch of seafood,” a staff member of the Xiamen Municipal Oceanic Development Bureau told the South China Morning Post.

“We’re not the only place doing this. We took the lesson from Hainan, which is witnessing a serious outbreak. It’s said that it may be triggered by marine product transactions between local fishermen and their overseas counterparts,” the staff member added.

Healthcare personnel, dressed in HAZMAT-style protective gear, can be seen in many videos putting cotton swabs into the mouths of fish and crabs.

The decision has been criticized by experts who say it is a waste of time and money, and it has been the subject of much mockery online.

Aside from testing freshly caught seafood, Xiamen’s quarantine hotels are also testing pillows, phones, and suitcases according to a US citizen who recently visited the city with his wife.

The healthcare worker swabbed the pillow.

A user on Twitter by the name of Daniel Rechtschaffen, a risk analyst in China and Northeast Asia, documented his trip to China.

“I disappear at end after being pulled aside for extra questioning because of my US passport… Have heard multiple reports of Customs harassing Americans since Pelosi’s Taiwan trip,” Dan wrote on his Twitter.

In another tweet, Dan wrote, “In addition to testing fish, our Xiamen quarantine hotel also tests our pillows, phones, and suitcases.”

The video was under fire after it was posted on Twitter showing medical staff in hazardous suits testing anything they could think of.

One user wrote, “If they can do the test on top of the mobiles and pillows, why do they have to test the human inside their noses?”

“It’s all a SHAM. Some spit on a swan should suffice, but then again we’ve all been 10000% conned!” one user responded.
