Disturbing surveillance video shows a 14-year-old Philadelphia boy pulling out a gun and shooting a robber in the face to stop him from ransacking the cash register at his family's pizzeria.

The violent incident took place around 9.30pm on December 9 at Bold Pizza on Spring Garden Street, just a few blocks away from the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

According to the police, the 33-year-old suspect walked into the pizza shop just minutes after taking part in another robbery targeting a CVS pharmacy a block away.

Armed robberies have skyrocketed by more than 40 percent in the City of Brotherly Love, with 2,213 incidents as of December 13, compared with 1,566 through the same period in 2020.

Video recorded by a surveillance camera inside Bold Pizza shows the masked bandit standing at the counter, then reaching over when a clerk opens the cash register.

The pizzeria employee puts up a fight and a struggle ensues, with the robber pulling the cash register toward him to get his hands on the money inside.

At that moment, the owner's 14-year-old son, who could be seen standing behind the counter, reaches for a gun, momentarily fumbles with it, then aims it at the intruder and pulls the trigger, striking him at least once in the face at a close range.

Police said the wounded robber fled the scene on foot, leaving a trail of blood behind him.

Officers who were summoned to the pizzeria found the business in disarray, with broken glass, cash and a 'large amount of blood' on the floor, reported 6abc.

It was not clear how much money the bleeding bandit was able to grab before fleeing.

Police followed the blood trail, which led them to a nearby SEPTA subway station, where they located the wounded robbery suspect with a large amount of cash stuffed inside his pocket, reported NBC Philadelphia.

'From following the trail of blood, we also found some cash in the subway where the suspect was found,' Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said.

The suspect was rushed to Jefferson Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. He has not been named.

Investigators said surveillance video from a nearby CVS on Spring Garden Street indicated the suspect was part of a trio that had raided the pharmacy just five minute earlier.

Police are still looking for two accomplices in connection with that crime.

No charges have been announced against the 14-year-old boy as of Thursday morning.

Philadelphia, with a population of 1.6 million, has been experiencing a massive crime wave, recording 530 homicides as of December 13 - breaking its record from 1990 and surpassing New York and Los Angeles, which have much larger populations.

According to the latest data, there have been more than 2,200 shooting victims in Philadelphia as of Monday, of whom 460 were killed.
