Former President Donald Trump released a statement ahead of Memorial Day weekend saying he was 'sorry' to hear that Americans would be confronted with higher than average gas prices, noting it was one of the 'biggest automobile days of the year.'

Gas prices across the US have now hit a seven-year high, and 34 million drivers expected to travel for the holiday face a steep bill at the pumps.

'Remember as you’re watching the meter tick, and your dollars pile up, how great of a job Donald Trump did as President,' Trump said. 'Soon Russia and the Middle East will be making a fortune on oil, and you will be saying how good it was to have me as your President.'

CNBC reported Thursday that gas prices over Memorial Day, the un-official start to summer, would be the highest for the holiday weekend in seven years.

The current average price of gas is $3.04 a gallon, according to AAA.

Gasoline demand reached 9.5 million barrels a day last week, the highest since March 13, 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic started causing shutdowns, CNBC said.

Americans are expected to take more driving vacations this summer because international travel continues to be difficult as COVID-19 is still causing problems globally, with restrictions in place for travelers.

Thirty-seven million Americans are expected to travel this weekend, which is a 60 per cent increase from 2020, when many communities still had stay-at-home orders in place.

Trump noted in his message that only a 'short number of months ago' gasoline was under $2 a gallon.

'Wasn’t it great to be energy independent, but we are energy independent no more,' he said.

Gas prices jumped after the Colonial Pipeline was hit by a ransomware attack earlier this month, which resulted in the shutdown of 5,500 miles of pipeline.

Some experts told CNBC they could see prices lingering around $3 through the summer - especially if a hurricane or refinery outages disrupt the supply.

'Everyone wants to get out. If there’s any hiccup in the system this summer, it’s going to be hard to fuel up,' Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, told the network.

Trump issued his statement Thursday through his website: 'From the desk of Donald J. Trump.'

'Shame, shame, shame,' he wrote.

He never brought up his successor, Presidnet Joe Biden, by name.

'Other than that, have a great Memorial Day Weekend!' the ex-president said.
