Tucker Carlson on Wednesday night praised 'our friend' Piers Morgan, commending his fellow television host for his refusal 'to let the mob make him lie', and describing him as an 'inspiration'.

Morgan, a former presenter on CNN and Daily Mail editor at large, was strongly critical of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's decision to speak to Oprah Winfrey, in an interview that aired on Sunday night in the U.S. and on Monday in the U.K.

He accused Meghan Markle and Prince Harry of damaging the royal family and seeking publicity on their own terms - without accepting the responsibility and scrutiny that come with their position.

He also accused the Los Angeles-born former actress of lying in the interview, saying he did not believe her version of events.

Morgan's criticism sparked a firestorm, and he left Good Morning Britain on Tuesday, following a furious row with his co-host Alex Beresford, which saw him storm off the set.

Carolyn McCall, the chief executive of ITV, had said earlier that she believed Markle 'completely'.

On Wednesday, Morgan was unrepentant, and told reporters outside his West London home: 'If I have to fall on my sword for expressing an honestly held opinion about Meghan Markle and that diatribe of bilge that she came out with in that interview, so be it.'

Carlson applauded the 55-year-old's stance.

'He left his job on the British morning show after failing to be sufficiently impressed by that whiny duchess from LA complaining about how hard her life is,' said Carlson.

'Now Piers Morgan knew what the script was supposed to be - "oh, you poor oppressed duchess" - but he refused to read it, so now he's unemployed.

Carlson then quoted a statement issued by Morgan on Twitter, in which he said: 'On Monday I said I didn't believe Meghan Markle and her Oprah interview.

'I had time to reflect on this and I still don't.

'If you did, okay. Freedom of speech is a hill I'm happy to die on.

'Thanks for all the love and hate, I'm off to spend more time with my opinions.'

Carlson compared Morgan favorably to musician Winston Marshall, who plays the banjo with British folk band Mumford and Sons.

Marshall tweeted on Sunday that he had read conservative journalist Andy Ngo’s book Unmasked: Inside Antifa’s Radical Plan to Destroy Democracy.

'Finally had the time to read your important book. You’re a brave man,' he tweeted - rapidly deleting it as criticism mounted.

On Tuesday he said he is 'taking time away from the band' and would 'examine my blindspots'.

Carlson also said Morgan handled the criticism better than The Bachelor host Chris Harrison, who has taken a break from the show after defending a contestant who attended a plantation-themed 'Old South' college party.

Carlson said: 'So Winston Marshall is leaving his job - another victory for the fascists on the internet.

'That's one way to handle attacks on speech, just surrender: that's what most famous people do. You see it every day.

'The guy that used to host The Bachelor may never work again.

'His crime? No one even knows what he did wrong. But he apologized for it anyway.'

Carlson continued: 'Like Winston Marshall, Piers Morgan is out of a job tonight, but unlike Winston Marshall, Morgan told the truth,

'He refused to let the mob make him lie, and that is an inspiration to all of us.

'Piers Morgan just reminded the world that some things are more important than having a job. Like your dignity and your self-respect. History will treat him well. Good for you, Piers Morgan.'
