The battle over sex-based rights and what it means to protect gender-confused children from harm is coming to a head in the Texas Senate race. The ideological differences — and actions — on gender ideology of Democrat James Talarico and Republican Ken Paxton couldn’t be more stark.
Texas Attorney General Paxton has made bold moves to stop vulnerable, gender-confused children from receiving irreversible sex-rejecting medical interventions such as puberty blockers and surgeries. Paxton’s investigation of fraud within pediatric gender medicine led to a historic $10 million settlement with Texas Children’s Hospital and the creation of the country’s first-ever detransition clinic. Detransitioners are individuals recovering from complex medical problems caused by sex-rejecting medical interventions. The clinic will provide specialized detransition-related medical care to minors and young adults who have been harmed by gender medicine.
Paxton called the detransition clinic at Texas Children’s Hospital a way to protect “innocent kids” from extreme harm when the clinic opened in late October 2026.
“In accordance with my settlement with Texas Children’s Hospital, the nation’s first-ever Detransition Clinic is now open,” said Paxton in a press release. “I will continue to ensure that this clinic provides the care and support that victims of the radical left’s gender ideology deserve. Together, we will protect our children and defeat the dangerous ideology that has inflicted irreversible harm on innocent kids.”
Talarico has taken an opposite approach to sex-based rights and pediatric gender medicine. In 2023, he voted against a bill that banned minors from receiving harmful irreversible sex-rejecting medical interventions. In 2021, he voted against a bill that linked student sports participation to biology.
Unearthed clips exposed his strong alignment with transgender activists and reveal Talarico once claimed Jesus would say “Blessed are the trans children,” if He visited the Texas State Legislature. He told a podcaster that he loves “trans children” during an August 2023 interview.
“I love, I’m just saying this because it’s all on my mind, the trans children who showed up yesterday at the state capitol to advocate for their humanity,” he said on the “A Superbloom” podcast. “They shouldn’t have to, but it was an inspiration to watch.”
The Human Rights Campaign PAC has given Talarico a full-throated endorsement.
“LGBTQ+ Texans deserve someone who rejects the politics of fear and division and stands up for them – for their freedom and for their futures. HRC is proud to endorse James Talarico and activate our over two million Texas Equality Voters to help bring new leadership to the Senate,” wrote the Human Rights Campaign PAC in a press release.
Talarico’s comments affirm the anti-science belief that human beings can change their sex — a lie which upholds the multi-billion-dollar transgender medical industry. Transgender activists believe human beings have a physical sex that is assigned at birth and a separate gender identity — a term that describes how a person feels about their sex. Activists believe a child’s physical sex and so-called gender identity can be mismatched. They believe cosmetically changing a child’s body through disfiguring surgeries and experimental hormone treatments to resemble the sex they feel like corrects this mismatch and providing these harmful interventions is a way to show love and compassion to so-called “trans children.”
Many detransitioners disagree that affirming the wrong belief that you change your sex is an act of love.
“The best way to love children who reject their sex is by holding the line of truth,” Soren Aldaco, a Texas detransitioner, told The Daily Wire. Aldaco struggled with gender confusion throughout her adolescence and underwent a double mastectomy at 19 that she later regretted.
“Humanity’s most basic truth, that there are two sexes, has been the subject of attack because every other truth rests upon it,” Aldaco told The Daily Wire. “That I lived against my nature had nothing to do with the clothes I wore or however atypical I was or wasn’t compared to other members of my sex. Rather, I lived against my nature because I refused to accept the most fundamental truth about myself: that I was a girl who would become a woman.”
The actions of Talarico and Paxton have demonstrated very different views of what it means to show compassion and love to gender-confused children.
President Trump won the 2024 election while promising to protect society from the harms of transgenderism. Texas voters will provide a litmus test of how much weight upholding sex-based rights and protecting children from the harms of gender ideology holds with American voters.
