President Donald J. Trump talks with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz during the G7 Summit, Monday, June 16, 2025, in Alberta, Canada – Of...

Merz is trying to undo the damage that he brought upon his own country.
We have been reporting here on TGP about German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s offensive comments about the US military strikes on Iran, and how President Donald J. Trump reacted to the slight by announcing substantial cuts in the number of American troops in Germany.
Reuters reported:
“German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he must accept that President Donald Trump does not share his opinions in order to work with the United States within NATO, but stressed there was no link between their rift and a planned troop drawdown.
Merz dismissed suggestions that his criticism of U.S. war planning in Iran had sparked Washington’s Friday announcement that the U.S. would reduce its military presence in Germany, its largest European base, by 5,000 soldiers, and repeated his commitment to the transatlantic alliance.”
“Merz had questioned whether Trump had an exit plan for the Middle East and said the U.S. was being “embarrassed” in talks with Iran. Trump later called Merz an “ineffectual” leader.
‘I have to accept that the American president has a different view on these issues than we do. But that does not change the fact that I remain convinced that the Americans are important partners for us’, Merz told public broadcaster ARD in an interview due to be aired later on Sunday.”
But while Merz is trying to decrease the temperature between the two ‘allies’, Trump is announcing the withdrawal of US forces in Germany to the tune of much more than the 5,000 troops initially announced.
Euronews reported:
“Trump indicated without sharing details that a substantial further reduction of US troop presence in Germany was imminent, just a day after the Pentagon announced a withdrawal of 5,000 soldiers. Trump has also threatened earlier in the week to rollback troops in Spain and Italy.
US President Donald Trump said late on Saturday that Washington will significantly reduce its troop presence in Germany, escalating a dispute with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.”

“Asked on Saturday on the reason behind the reduction in troop presence in the country, Trump declined to offer an explanation, instead noting that an even bigger reduction was imminent, as the Republican president seeks to scale back US commitment to European security.
[…] ‘We’re going to cut way down. And we’re cutting a lot further than 5,000’, Trump told reporters in Florida.”
