Texas Sends 12th Bus of Migrants to LA; Response Highlights Sanctuary City Hypocrisy (7 Cartoons)

Texas dispatched its 12th bus transporting migrants to Los Angeles, California, this past Monday, a move that comes shortly after Los Angeles city leaders considered taking legal measures against the Lone Star State.

The bus reached Union Station in Los Angeles at approximately 7:15 a.m., according to the office of Mayor Karen Bass. Local news outlet FOX 11 detailed the passengers: 23 men, 20 women, and 21 children. Their origins spanned several countries, including Colombia, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Russia, and Venezuela.

Zach Seidle, Los Angeles Deputy Mayor of Communications, commented on the city’s ongoing efforts to manage the situation: “The city has continued to work with city departments, the county, and a coalition of nonprofit organizations, in addition to our faith partners, to execute a plan set in place earlier this year. As we have before, when we became aware of the bus yesterday, we activated our plan.”

This recent bus arrival comes on the heels of the Los Angeles City Council’s unanimous decision to explore a lawsuit and criminal investigation targeting Texas and its migrant transportation initiative. Council representatives have sought the guidance of the city attorney’s office, questioning the legality of Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s actions and evaluating the grounds for a potential lawsuit.

The numbers shed light on the scale of Abbott’s program: since its inception on June 14, 435 migrants have found their way to Los Angeles, while the overall figure stands at over 30,000 migrants sent to Democratic-controlled cities such as New York City, Chicago, and Washington, D.C.

Texas’s rationale for sending migrants to Los Angeles is rooted in the city’s designation as a sanctuary city. An assurance to Fox News Digital from Abbott’s office spotlighted this status and clarified that migrants on these buses were fully informed of their destination, as evidenced by multi-language consent waivers.

In a forthright statement, Abbott spokesman Andrew Mahaleris called out the LA City Council, noting their apparent double standard: “The LA City Council members are complete hypocrites. In June, they unanimously voted to become a sanctuary city, welcoming migrants to the city. Texas initiated its program of busing migrants to sanctuary cities like Los Angeles last year, aiming to alleviate pressure on our border towns that are stretched to their limits.”

Mahaleris didn’t stop there. He pressed the LA City Council to take a more active stance: “Instead of expressing dismay at handling a minor portion of the border issues our smaller border towns confront daily, the City Council should be urging President Biden to decisively act to fortify the border—a responsibility the President has consistently overlooked.”

It’s worth noting that the LA City Council sanctioned a motion on June 9 to officially designate Los Angeles as a sanctuary city.

Governor Abbott’s decision to continue these migrant transportations stems from the undeniable fact: Texas’s border areas are inundated with immigrants entering from Mexico.
