Pollsters See 2024 Weakness For Biden Among Non-White Voters

Support for President Joe Biden appears to be dropping off among non-white voters, leading to fresh warnings about the incumbent being vulnerable as he seeks re-election in 2024.

A CNN poll, conducted by SSRS and released on Thursday, found 58% support for Biden among people of color who are registered voters in a hypothetical 2024 rematch against former President Donald Trump, the current GOP frontrunner who received 34% support from the same demographic.

“CNN/SSRS shows Trump+1, and the underlying story is much like the other polls: Biden hitting his targets among whites, matching the 43-44% of decided major party voters he won last time, but leading just 58-34 among nonwhite voters,” Nate Cohn of The New York Times said in a post to X.

The assessment prompted responses from other pollsters, journalists, and politicians.

“We’re still a while away from Election Day, but the Biden campaign is currently taking a lot of non-white support for granted,” said pollster Frank Luntz.

“Imagine if Biden were to lose to Trump next year because *nonwhite* voters didn’t turn out for him in sufficient numbers. Imagine what an own goal that would be for people of color in this country. But anything’s possible these days,” posited MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan.

“What do you think explains the decline in polling among non-white voters? Is it needing a compelling economic vision or something else?” asked Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA).

Cohn, who is the chief political analyst for The New York Times, has written multiple reports in recent days about “consistent” indicators of eroding support for Biden among minorities, particularly Hispanic and black voters.

The journalist noted a “marked deterioration” in support when comparing New York Times/Siena College national polling over the last year with numbers seen in 2020, when Biden won more than 70% of non-white voters, and Biden appears to be running “well behind” where he was in polling during the run-up to the last presidential contest.

CNN’s new poll mirrored recent surveys with other findings that bode ill for Biden.

Pollster Nate Silver highlighted CNN’s question to Democrats and Democrat-leaning independents who are registered to vote asking them to identify their biggest concern about Biden seeking re-election in 2024. Biden’s age topped the list.

“Glad CNN asked this question because it underscores how the very large majority of anxiety among D voters have about Biden centers around his age,” Silver said. “It’s not that he’s too liberal, or too conservative. It’s not the Hunter Biden stuff. It’s that he’s 80.”
