Illegal immigrant encounters on the United States’ northern border spiked approximately 36% in July, recently released federal data reveals.

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, a total of 1,154 encounters near the northern border were recorded for July, up from 848 in June. The majority of those come from countries in Latin America.

While there were just 916 recorded encounters at the northern border in fiscal year 2021, the numbers have since increased to 2,238 in fiscal year 2022. There have since been 7,633 encounters between October 2022 and July 2023.

Border Patrol agents in the Swanton Border Patrol Sector, which spans New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York, have become “overwhelmed with the amount of work that they have to do,” Sean Walsh, president of the National Border Patrol Council for the Swanton Sector, said in a statement. “The priority is the southern border so the majority of the resources are diverted.”

The ongoing surge has compelled New Hampshire Republican Governor Chris Sununu to call for the creation of a congressional delegation tasked with securing the Swanton Sector.

Illegal border crossings have surged under the Biden administration, with an estimated 1.5 million illegal immigrant gotaways being recorded since Biden took office in 2021. There were 415,000 total reported gotaways in 2018, 2019, and 2020 during the Trump administration.

Meanwhile, there’s been a 1,000% increase in illegal immigration from several countries, including China, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, and the Dominican Republic.

Major cities like Chicago and New York have struggled to manage the massive influx of foreign nationals. Chicago passed a measure to provide $51 million in funding to house and feed migrants, while 50 places of worship in New York City are now being used to accommodate foreign nationals.

New York residents recently protested a plan to convert a former nursing home into a housing center for migrants.

Fox News poll, which surveyed just over 1,000 registered voters in late June, found that 62% of respondents disapproved of Biden’s handling of the border, while only 35% approve.

The results reaffirmed the findings of an earlier CBS News poll published in May, which similarly found that 63% of respondents disapprove of Biden’s handling of the border, with just 37% saying that they approve.
