Former Vice President Joe Biden, who the media quickly dubbed the President-elect over the weekend after calling wins for a number of key swing states, has immediate plans to bolster COVID-19 mitigation efforts. One of those plans, according to one of his top advisers, is a total national lockdown for a period of 4-6 weeks.
But according to The Hill, that’s not going to be the case in the reliably red state of Mississippi, where Governor Tate Reeves made clear — in only the way that a southerner can — that his state will absolutely not comply with a six-week long national lockdown.
In a recent Facebook Live video, Reeves revealed his resistance in the most clear and simple language he could: “We’re not going to participate in a nation-wide lockdown.”
Reeves made the remark after top Biden health adviser, Michael Osterholm, defended the idea of a lockdown and claimed it wouldn’t hurt small businesses based on a ridiculous strategy of borrowing money to pay for lost wages and all kinds of additional liberal nonsense.
“We have a big pool of money out there that we could borrow. The historic low interest rates by the federal government, we could pay for a package right now to cover all of the wages, lost wages for individual workers, for our losses to small companies to medium sized companies, for city states, county governments,” Osterholm said.
Reeves, however, isn’t buying it. Not one bit.
He called Osterholm’s proposal “totally and completely beyond reasonableness,” while pointing out that Mississippi, like other states, would end up financially crippled if they had to suffer through another extended lockdown period, like many states did in the early stages of the pandemic.
The Mississippi governor also stressed that while Biden could make lockdown recommendations to the states, that ultimately it would rest upon the states to determine if they follow such an outrageous, economy-killing notion or not.
“We will certainly fight that if necessary,” Reeves said.
He went on to say that he’ll continue managing the virus’ spread in his state on a county-by-county level, as rural areas and populated areas both have vastly different needs and experience different economic consequences related to the virus.
Reeves is a prime example of just how large a role Republican governors will play in what very well could be a Biden/Harris administration where shutting down booming economies is their answer to controlling the virus. Hopefully, more red state governors follow Reeves’ lead and take a stand for freedom and states’ rights.
