The New York Times has been forced to issue a correction after drawing outrage over a tweet proclaiming that the news media is responsible for 'declaring' the nation's next president.

'The role of declaring the winner of a presidential election in the U.S. falls to the news media. The broadcast networks and cable news outlets have vowed to be prudent. Here's how it will work,' the Times tweeted on Tuesday.

The tweet linked to an article explaining how the media will report election results.

The poorly worded tweet drew immediate backlash and accusations that the newspaper was anointing itself as the arbiter of the election's outcome.

'I'm fairly certain the role of declaring the winner of a presidential election in the U.S. falls to the Secretaries of State of the several States. But thanks for ripping the mask completely off, you hacks,' one person tweeted.

'Just when you thought the [mainstream media] could not be more condescending and self-congratulatory,' another remarked.

Eventually, the Times deleted the tweet in question and issued a correction.

'Correction: We've deleted an earlier tweet that referred imprecisely to the role of the news media in the U.S. presidential election,' the newspaper said.

'The news media projects winners and reports results; it does not declare the winner of the election,' the correction continued.

A spokeswoman for the Times did not immediately respond to an inquiry from DailyMail.com late on Tuesday.

The issue of how the presidential election's winner will be declared has been unusually contentious this cycle, with President Donald Trump's critics accusing him of planning to declare victory prematurely, before a clear winner can be projected.
