It’s Gay Pride month, so that means everyone everywhere must weigh in.
The British Library, a research library in London that is one of the two largest libraries in the world along with the Library of Congress, just had to get in on the act.
“This #Pride month, let us tell you about the Māori wrasse (also known as the humphead wrasse),” the library wrote Friday on Twitter. “But its wondrous forehead isn’t the most magnificent thing about this fish – they are protogynous hermaphrodites, which means the females can later change sex to become males.”
The library went on. “Scientists are still learning about the factors that cause this transition, but fish typically change sex to fill a niche in their environment – a female wrasse named Cena at the @NatlAquarium transformed into supermale upon the passing of a male named Tang.”

It didn’t take long for Twitterers to jump into the fray, prompting the library to delete its entire thread.
“When people can actually generate vagina, uterus, ovaries, and the endocrine system to support pregnancy, WITHOUT MEDICAL INTERVENTION AND SUPPORT, get back to us,” one user wrote, according to an archived file on the Wayback Machine. “Until then, ponder how your example didn’t make the point you think it did.”
Another wrote simply: “Pride month is also a celebration of hermaphroditic fish.”
Wrote another: “Are you saying gay men are actually women because fish?”
And yet another: “And what kind of weird connection does Pride Month have to this fish now? Actually, I thought we were mammals.”
The library’s post came as a new poll found the vast majority of Americans, when asked if they agree with the statement “There are two genders, male and female,” said they agree.
The latest Rasmussen Reports survey said 71% of likely voters believe that there are just two genders. In a surprise, 67% of Democrats agreed — only 14% of Democrats strongly disagree with the statement.
What’s more, 57% of all polled strongly disagree with those who say there are more than two genders, said the pollster.
The poll findings come in the midst of Pride month and as companies across the country, like Anheuser-Busch and Target, kowtow to the LGBTQ+ community. But that has backfired, as sales of Bud Light have tanked 30% since the beer company joined forces with transgender activist Dylan Mulvaney. Target, which launched a line of gay pride clothing, has been hit with protests and boycotts and has lost $13 billion in market value over the past two weeks.
