A 14-year-old Serbian student allegedly opened fire at a school in Belgrade, Serbia, on Wednesday morning, killing eight children and a school guard. Six other children and a teacher were injured in the attack before the suspected shooter was arrested in the schoolyard.

The suspected assailant allegedly used his father’s gun at the Vladislav Ribnikar school in the central Vracar neighborhood, according to the BBC.

“The police sent all available patrols immediately to the spot and arrested a suspected minor — a seventh-grade student who is suspected of firing several shots from his father’s gun in the direction of students and school security,” Serbia’s interior ministry stated.

“[The suspect] first shot the teacher and then he started shooting randomly,” Milan Milosevic, who said his daughter was in the class where the shooter fired, told broadcaster N1. “I saw the security guard lying under the table. I saw two girls with blood on their shirts. They say he [the shooter] was quiet and a good pupil. He recently joined their class.”

“I asked where is my child but no one could tell me anything at first,” he added. “Then she called and we found out she was out.” He said his daughter told him that after shooting the teacher, the shooter fired at children who ducked under their desks.

“I was able to hear the shooting. It was nonstop,” one student said. She said she was in a sports class downstairs when the shooter started firing. “I didn’t know what was happening. We were receiving some messages on the phone.”

“He was having good grades, but we didn’t know much about him,” the girl said. “He was not so open with everybody. Surely I wasn’t expecting this to happen.”
