EXCLUSIVE: GOP Senate Candidate Matt Dolan Outlines Strategy Against 18-Year Incumbent Sherrod Brown

Republican state Sen. and Ohio Senate candidate Matt Dolan will highlight Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown’s partisan voting record in campaign ads, despite attempts to describe the three-term incumbent as an independent voice.

First elected to the Senate in 2007 after eight terms in the House, Brown voted with Barack Obama’s position 95% of the time during the 44th president’s first term. He has voted in line with President Joe Biden’s position 98.5% of the time, according to FiveThirtyEight’s tracker.

Dolan finished third in the 2022 Ohio Republican primary to replace retiring Sen. Rob Portman, and declared his candidacy to take on Brown in January.

“Together, Brown and Biden have ruined our economy. They’ve raised prices, and they’ve weakened America. They’ve opened our borders and allowed deadly fentanyl to pour into Ohio communities,” Dolan’s initial campaign ad, obtained exclusively by the Daily Caller, says. Dolan focused his 2022 run on China, immigration, and inflation, winning Columbus, Cleveland, and their surrounding counties.

The ad and an accompanying website note Brown’s support for eliminating the filibuster and openness to court-packing

Dolan intends for the ad to push back on messaging from Welcome PAC, a hybrid political action committee that spent nearly $1.9 million during the 2022 midterms and supported Democratic candidate Tim Ryan. The PAC’s co-founder, Lauren Harper, wrote in a Columbus Dispatch op-ed that Brown “crossed the aisle time and time again” during the Trump era while accusing Dolan of being “power-hungry.”

“Liberal PACs and partisan left-wing organizations are smearing me and conservatives in Ohio because they cannot defend Sherrod Brown’s liberal record. They claim there’s no proof that Sherrod Brown is blindly loyal to his party. Well, we have the receipts,” Dolan said in a statement to the Daily Caller.

“For years, Sherrod Brown has said one thing to Ohioans and voted against our interests in the U.S. Senate. He claims to be a champion of workers, but he votes in lockstep with Joe Biden more than 98% of the time to undermine the national security of our nation and the financial security of working families. Sherrod Brown doesn’t understand that Ohioans want security, not a federal government that opens our borders, contributes to inflation and demonizes our police. I’m running for Senate to confront the big challenges Sherrod Brown and Joe Biden have kicked down the road for a generation. I have a proven conservative record of success that has yielded results for Ohio families, workers and businesses.”

Brown first entered Congress in 1993, representing the Cleveland suburbs until he successfully ran for senate against then-incumbent Sen. Mike DeWine. Brown won by 12 points in 2006, five points in 2012, and seven points in 2018, even as Ohio has trended towards the GOP.
