Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has slammed Republican Lauren Boebert for her family Christmas picture where her four children are armed with rifles.

Her outspoken attack comes as many political commentators and activists described Boebert's Christmas photo, which was posted just eight days after four high school students were killed in a school shooting in Michigan, as 'sickening'.

Boebert posted an image of herself and her four children, all of whom were carrying semi-automatic rifles, in front of a Christmas tree on Wednesday.

Ocasio-Cortez slammed Boebert for the photo, tweeting: 'Tell me again where Christ said "use the commemoration of my birth to flex violent weapons for political gain"?

'Lol at all the years Republicans spent on cultural hysteria of society "erasing Christmas and it's meaning" when they're doing that fine all on their own.'

Boebert posted the Christmas image on Wednesday in response to a tweet by Republican Thomas Massie where he shared a similar photo of him and his family holding rifles in front of a Christmas tree on Saturday.

Massie, who shared the photograph four days after the Michigan high school shooting, tweeted the image with the caption: 'Merry Christmas! Ps. Santa, please bring ammo.'

Boebert replied with her own rifle-clad family photo and tweeted: The Boeberts have your six, Rep. Thomas Massie. No spare ammo for you though.'

The images have sparked backlash as they were posted just days after Ethan Crumbley, 15, allegedly opened fire at Oxford High School in Michigan, killing four fellow students and wounding six others and a teacher.

Cenk Uygur, the host of US political commentary show The Young Turks, said: 'The right-wing in this country is a horror show. This is obvious child endangerment.

'No other country would tolerate this kind of insanity. Conservatives raise their children in a culture of violence and bloodlust. Then we wonder why there is non--stop massacres in our schools.'

Actor Bruno Amato joined a wave of criticism and tweeted: 'I heard four young kids were gunned down this week, so here is a photo of my kids with their guns just to say f*** you to their memories. Sincerely, Lauren Boebert.'

The UK's Archbishop of Canterbury, the senior bishop and principal leader of the Church of England, said he was 'sickened' by the image posted by Massey.

He tweeted: 'This weekend many of us were sickened to see a Christmas photo of a family posing with guns.

'The message of the angels at Christmas is peace on earth and goodwill to all people. It has nothing to do with the US gun rights debate.'

Political commentator Piers Morgan, speaking about Boebert's Christmas picture, tweeted: 'My God…. it’s been just a week since America suffered yet another horrific school shooting and a second politician posts a photo of her young family parading semi-automatic weapons in front of a Christmas tree. This is sickening.'

Ethan Crumbley, 15, opened fire at Oxford High School on November 30 after a guidance counseling meeting with his parents at the school.

Four students were killed and seven more people were injured in the shooting. Madisyn Baldwin, 17; Tate Myre, 16; Hana St. Juliana, 14; and Justin Shilling, 17, died during the shooting.

Crumbley will be tried as an adult on 24 charges, including one count of terrorism and four counts of murder.

The teenager had a meeting with school administrators, and his mother was contacted via voicemail by the school about her son's inappropriate ammunition-related  internet search.

According to the prosecutor, the mother and father also failed to ask Ethan if he had his gun with him, or where his gun was, and did not inspect his backpack.

Instead, the teen returned to class and the shooting occurred later.

Crumbley's parents James, 45, and Jennifer, 43, face four charges of involuntary manslaughter.

Ocasio-Cortez slamming Boebert for posting the Christmas family photo of her four children holding rifles is the latest in a long-lasting feud between the pair.

Boebert has been embroiled in controversy after she was captured on video suggesting that Somali-born Representative Ilhan Omar might be a terrorist.

Ocasio-Cortez yesterday slammed House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy for running a 'Ku Klux Klan' caucus and failing to take action against Islamophobia in its ranks.

Speaking about the death threats Omar has received since Boebert's comments, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted: 'People truly don't understand the scale, intensity, & volume of threats targeting @IlhanMN.

'Kevin McCarthy is so desperate to be speaker that he is working with his Ku Klux Klan caucus to look aside & allow violent targeting of [women of color] members of Congress. This cannot be ignored.

While people toss out clichés like "we condemn all forms of racism & bigotry," the fact is Islamophobia is far too often tolerated and ignored.

'Bigotry is not made unacceptable by what one says about it, it's made acceptable based on whether there are consequences for it or not.'

Ocasio-Cortez continued to say that the GOP had been given 'freedom to incite' without fear of consequences, particularly when the victims were from minority communities.

Last week McCarthy angered Democrats and some in his own party by promising to restore committee assignments to two lawmakers accused of promoting violence against lawmakers.

The latest controversy erupted with video showing Boebert addressing supporters during the Thanksgiving break, when she told a story about sharing an elevator with Omar.

'"Well, she doesn't have a backpack. We should be fine,'" Boebert recalled saying to an aide, to hoots of laughter.

'And I said, "Oh look, the jihad squad decided to show up for work today."'

Omar said the incident never took place. And the comments quickly attracted widespread criticism and calls for punishment.

Boebert tweeted on Thursday: 'I apologize to anyone in the Muslim community I offended with my comment about Rep Omar. I have reached out to her office to speak with her directly.

'There are plenty of policy differences to focus on without unnecessary distraction.'

Omar (l) hung up on Rep. Lauren Boebert on Monday during a phone call when the two lawmakers demanded apologies of each other. Last week it emerged that Boebert had made jokes about Omar being a terrorist. A second video of similar comments emerged on Tuesday

Since then, a second video dating from September, showed Boebert making a similar joke.

She called Omar to smooth things over but their conversation ended when the Democrat hung up the phone with each lawmaker demanding an apology.

'She didn’t want to hear what I had to say,' Boebert told Laura Ingraham on Fox News on Tuesday evening.

'Omar and the left don’t want an apology. They want public humiliation. They want to cancel me but that’s not going to happen… I will not be canceled.'
