Thirteen Australian women were pulled off a plane to have their genitals 'invasively examined' at Doha Airport after a foetus was found in the terminal bathroom.

The Federal Government has 'formally registered serious concerns' after the group were strip searched at Hamad International Airport last month.

Airline staff allegedly found an abandoned premature baby in the bathroom before ordering the women off their flight to Sydney and into an ambulance stationed on the tarmac.

The women were then allegedly ordered to remove their underwear and 'invasively examined' without their consent.

It is understood none of the women were told about the deceased baby prior to the humiliating physical examination.

The incident has become a serious matter between the Australian and Qatari government, according to 7News.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was aware of the 'concerning reports'.

'We have formally registered our serious concerns regarding the incident with Qatari authorities and have been assured that detailed and transparent information on the event will be provided soon,' it said.

The women complained about the incident while in hotel quarantine after returning to Australia, the Daily Telegraph reports.

The Australian government does not have the authority to launch an investigation but the Department of Foreign Affairs is working with the Qatar government to address the issue.
