The US standing in the world and with American allies collapsed last month following Joe Biden’s calamitous withdrawal from Afghanistan.

The IBD/TIPP Standing In The World Index, a unique metric that measures Americans’ opinion on the country’s position as a world leader, declined 8.2 points or 16.1%, from 50.9 in August to 42.7 in September.
It is the second-largest monthly percentage drop in the last 20 years, trailing only the October 2017 drop of 20.1%, when the Las Vegas shooting killed 58 people and injured 500 more.
By points, it is the fourth-biggest drop over the past 20 years.
Multiple factors are behind the loss of confidence.
- Americans continue to suffer trauma as a result of the botched Afghanistan withdrawal. It has exacerbated fears of terrorism and fosters a loss of confidence.
- As the withdrawal was in progress, a suicide bomber killed 13 U.S. service members and dozens of Afghans at Kabul Airport, the worst day for U.S. forces in Afghanistan in a decade. Thirty more troops and hundreds of Afghans were hurt.
- Many Americans are still stuck in Afghanistan.
- The U.S. has spent nearly one trillion dollars and has nothing to show so far.
- The reconstruction of Afghanistan was, at best, a mixed success.
- Our allies have been harshly critical of how we withdrew.
