'White Man Demands': MSNBC's Joy Reid slams critical race opponent Chris Rufo's offer of debate - despite trashing him on her show

MSNBC host Joy Reid has lashed out against opponent of critical race theory Christopher Rufo, for making what she called 'White Man Demands' after he challenged her to invite him on her show.

Rufo has been working to expose 'critical race theory indoctrination' in American companies and institutions including government agencies for at least a year.

He has used whistleblower documents and spoken to people who have undergone substantial amounts of antiracism training in an attempt to prove there is systemic racism and white oppression both within education and corporate America.

Rufo claims CRT is itself racist, and that it damages the United States by conditioning people to either see themselves an oppressor, or the oppressed.

Reid takes a different view of the situation, preferring to see antiracism training as an essential tool used to wipe out systemic racism and unconscious bias which she and other CRT supporters claim pervades every echelon of American society.

The TV star has also branded people who oppose CRT as racist, to the fury of Rufo and his supporters.

Reid has taken on Rufo many times before on her show over his opposition to critical race theory but now he is challenging her to a face-to-face debate.

'Joy Reid has denounced me by name multiple times on her show. But she doesn't have the courage to invite me on as a guest. She knows I will crush her critical race theory apologetics any day of the week,' Rufo wrote in a tweet.

On Saturday, Reid took aim at Rufo once again and called out his challenge to a debate as a 'weirdly aggressive way to get yourself on TV.'

'This is a weirdly aggressive way to get yourself on TV, Christopher..,' Reid wrote on Twitter. 'Why not just contact my booking producers like a normal person, rather than going with the White Man Demands option? I had never even heard of you until @oneunderscore__piece exposing your plot to rebrand CRT.'

Reid took the opportunity to slam Rufo and his work on her show.

'There is this obsession right now with taking everything that talks about race... and labelling it critical race theory,' she said, speaking to author Annette Gordon-Reed about a new book on Juneteenth.

Reid then brought up Rufo, saying 'This is a guy named Christopher Rufo, who is at a conservative think tank [the Manhattan Institute], and he said 'the goal is to have the public read something crazy in the newspaper and immediately think 'critical race theory... We have decodified the term and will recodify it it to annex the entire range of cultural constructions that are unpopular with Americans.''

Reid's guest agreed with her in downplaying the impact of the theory.

'It's a distraction. No one is teaching critical race theory K-12.'

'Just to be clear,' Reid asked, 'What is critical race theory?'

'Critical race theory talks about the influence of race in American laws, even things that don't have to do specifically with the, they're not talking about race, very often they have a racial component to that,' Gordon-Reed said.

'And it permeates law, and that's what people are thinking about. This is not K-12 material, but they're saying that any time you talk about race is you're talking critical race theory. Critical race theorists talk about race but not everyone who talks about race are a critical race theorists.'

Last week, President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act to make June 19 a federal holiday to reflect on the 'original sin' and 'moral stain' of slavery on America.

The debate over critical race theory has become a cultural hot topic in the US over the last year, after former President Donald Trump banned its teaching across federal government departments last year.

His successor Joe Biden rescinded that order, but the debate has raged on, with multiple conservative US states now banning the teaching of critical race theory in their public schools.

Multiple private schools - including Dalton, Spence, Grace Church and Brearley in New York have all been embroiled in scandals which have seen parents or teachers speak out about those establishments' alleged obsession with CRT above all else.

Footage of parents hitting out at school boards during public meetings has also gone viral in recent months, with Loudoun County in Virginia making weekly headlines over many of its parents' aversion to CRT.
