An assistant building superintendent was killed by an elevator in the Brooklyn apartment building where he worked.
Kennie Lessie, 64, died in the tragic accident which happened around 1:15 p.m. in an apartment building about four blocks from where he lived in the Prospect Lefferts Gardens neighborhood of Brooklyn, the NYPD told DailyMail.com.
Lessie had gone down to the elevator machine room in the basement with a tenant to find a cell phone that had fallen into the pit at the bottom of the elevator shaft, investigators with New York City Department of Buildings told WABC-TV.

Cops told the New York Daily News that passengers were in the elevator when the man was killed.
The tenant, 36, also suffered minor injuries to his fingers during the incident while trying to save the man and render aid, cops said.
The building's head super Eddie Adis told the Daily News he went to check the basement after tenants reported hearing a loud noise.
The visibly shaken Adis told the outlet that his colleague 'was crushed.'
'He was a good man. He died trying to help a tenant,' Adis said.
A man who lives in the neighborhood, 26-year-old Kevin Richmond, told the Daily News that Lessie had worked in the building for decades.
'He was the best janitor we ever had. He worked on everybody's house and he helped everyone,' Richmond said.
