The former director of the CIA has said he is 'embarrassed' to be a white male while discussing the US Capitol riot.

Speaking as part of a panel of guests on MSNBC yesterday, John Brennan, 65, was asked whether some members of the Republican party are lying about the events leading up to the US capitol siege.

'Deadline White House' host Nicolle Wallace asked Brennan whether a recent New York Times report on the death of Capitol Police officer Brian D. Sicknick 'renders at best, hypocritical, at worst cynical and false, any notion that the Republicans care about the lives and safety of law enforcement.'

In response, Brennan said: 'I'm increasingly embarrassed to be a white male these days, when I see what my other white males [are] saying.'

He continued: 'It just shows that with very few exceptions, like Mitt Romney, Liz Cheney, Adam Kinzinger, there are so few Republicans in Congress who value truth, honesty, and integrity.'

While speaking on the issue of Republican lawmakers suggesting the capitol riot was blown out of proportion, Brennan said: 'They'll continue to gaslight the country the way that Donald Trump did.

'And the fact that this has such security and safety implications for the American public, and for the members of Congress, again, as Claire [McCaskill] said, it is just a disgusting display of craven politics that really should have no place in the United State in 2021.'

It comes after nearly 5,000 are believed to have been stationed in the Capitol ahead of March 4 - when QAnon followers believe Donald Trump will become president again.

The US Capitol Police requested 4,900 National Guard troops remain in the nation's capital until at least March 12.

It's not known publicly if there are any threats to the Capitol, which was the site of the pro-Trump insurrection on January 6 that left five dead.

March 4 is important for QAnon conspirators because it was the former inauguration date of the country before the 20th Amendment moved it up to its current date in January.

Conspirators who believe Donald Trump's false claims that the election was 'rigged' believe that Trump will be able to claim the presidency on the historic inauguration date on Thursday.
