A shoplifter was shot dead in a dramatic shootout with Chicago police on Thursday.

The shootout happened after the suspect fired at a Home Depot store security guard when he tried to stop the man stealing from the shop.

A police officer was shot in the shoulder during the pursuit near the Brighton Park neighborhood, Chicago, at about 4pm.

The dramatic footage shows the suspect firing on police, who were called to the scene, after he had injured the Home Depot guard.

In the video, a police officer can be seen gaining access to the garden, next door to where the suspect is shooting from behind a car.

Standing on a pile of outdoor items, the officer shoots the suspect from close range.

Once the suspect is down, the officer clambers over the fence separating the two gardens and is joined by a swarm of police.

Brown said: 'I get questions all the time about what is the department doing about violence, what are we doing about the shootings, what are we doing about the homicides. What we are doing is risking our lives every day to protect this city.

'But here in Chicago... it's the idea that cops are putting their lives on the line every day and it seems that these offenders are acting with impunity and yet with hyper-criticism, officers continue to run toward danger.'

An investigation into Thursday's shooting is ongoing.
