The new owner, who has bought the top storey and two lower ground apartments at No 1 Grosvenor Square, plans to spend millions more converting it into a single home, spanning 15,600sq ft.

Although Gabriel York, chief executive of developer Lodha UK, was unable to disclose the identity of the new owner, he did say the majority of the buyers in the building were 'those who run businesses based in the UK including some of the top FTSE companies'

In February 1938 Joseph Kennedy was was named by President Roosevelt to be the American ambassador in the UK.

With war looming over Europe, many Americans were wary of being drawn into another conflict. The father of a future U.S. president, too wanted to keep America out of the war with Nazi Germany.

When the Kennedys landed on British soil, they were an immediate hit with the public and the upper class society but as Hitler's power grew and he made increasing menacing moves in Central and Eastern Europe, Kennedy's family returned to the US.
