 Police in Iowa have charged the parents of a two-year-old boy with child endangerment, after the toddler accidentally shot his mother with an unsecured gun he found in the family home.

Meriah Carlyle, 21, and her boyfriend, 23-year-old Logan Keller, have each been charged this week for allegedly leaving a loaded handgun on a bedside table on November 4.

According to investigators, the two-year-old boy, whom DailyMail.com is not naming because he is a juvenile, found the gun inside the family's home in Dyersville, then accidentally shot his mother.

Police responded to the residence on 4th Avenue NE at around 6.15pm and found Carlyle suffering from a critical injury to her leg. 

The victim was initially taken to Finley Hospital in Dubuque before she was airlifted to Iowa City for life-saving treatment.

According to the description of a GoFundMe campaign that has been launched to help the family with their expenses, the bullet severely damaged Carlyle's femoral artery and femur. Over the past two weeks, the woman has undergone three surgeries, including one that lasted eight hours.

'We are trying to raise as much as possible for her, so she can pay off her medical bills from this terrible accident,' the fundraiser page stated. 'Please help meriah, as she will have a long road to recovery so anything helps.' 

Police said in a criminal complaint that both Carlyle and Keller were in the room with their son where the gun was, but did not notice the boy had picked up the weapon until it discharged.

The parents were arrested on Monday and were released on promised to appear, reported KWWL
