GOP chair Ronna McDaniel deletes tweet suggesting Trump lost the election as the president tweets his continued support for her

Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel appeared to acknowledge President Trump's defeat on Wednesday when she tweeted that Democratic Senator Kamala Harris would have the Senate's 'deciding vote' should there be a 50-50 split in the chamber.

The tweet was quickly deleted, but McDaniel was referring to two Georgia runoff races which could give the Democrats 50 seats in the Senate if candidates Jon Ossoff and the Rev. Raphael Warnock win their respective races.

Despite the apparent slip-up, President Trump later endorsed McDaniel to stay on in her position.

Republicans currently have 50 Senate seats in the next Congress, compared with 48 for Democrats. Control of the chamber will be decided by the two January runoffs with Republicans needing to win one more seat for a majority.

The Democrats would win control if it ends up a 50-50 tie because Vice President-elect Kamala Harris would be allowed to cast the tie-breaking vote.

'If Democrats control Senate: Leader [Charles] Schumer, Budget Chair Bernie [Sanders] (hello socialism), Finance Chair [Ron] Wyden (goodbye tax cuts), Judiciary Chair [Dianne] Feinstein (liberal judges), HELP Chair [Patty] Murray (govt control of health care), Deciding Vote Kamala Harris,' McDaniel tweeted.

The tweet, prior to her removing it, was also retweeted by the Republican Party’s official Twitter account.

Later, the RNC responded by calling the tweet 'clearly a hypothetical' before adding 'the RNC is fighting every step of the way to ensure all legal votes, and only legal votes, are counted.'

Also on Wednesday, Trump tweeted: 'I am pleased to announce that I have given my full support and endorsement to Ronna McDaniel to continue heading the Republican National Committee (RNC).'

McDaniel oversaw an investment in the GOP's field and data program that helped Trump close in on President-elect Joe Biden in key battleground states, but it wasn't enough to overcome the stiff headwinds of Trump´s handling of the coronavirus.

'With 72 MILLION votes, we received more votes than any sitting President in U.S. history - and we will win!' Trump added in a tweet.

The Trump administration has so far refused to acknowledge Biden's win, and aside from angrily tweeting unsupported claims of voter fraud, the president has made no comments in person since Biden clinched the 270 electoral votes on Saturday needed to win the presidency.

The General Services Administration has declined to sign off on giving Biden's team transition resources, while Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Tuesday that there will be a smooth transition to a 'second Trump administration.'
