The New York Post reports that a Facebook insider claims that Facebook is using “Chinese nationals” on censorship for their platform. The report states that there are “at least half a dozen” of them working for Facebook, specifically working on the censorship of posted content.
The Facebook insider said, “So at some point, they [Facebook bosses] thought, ‘Hey, we’re going to get them H-1B visas so they can do this work.’
The tech company hires most of these “Chinese nationals” to work on their “Hate-Speech Engineering” team. This team is responsible for teaching Facebook’s internal code “how to learn to act without being explicitly programmed.” The NY Post says that this is what earns the tech company’s “software wizards discretionary bonuses.”
The company is teaching its computer system to identify content the company likes and push it to the top of your feed while other content is moved to the bottom. A number of conservative sites and pages have seen a drop in reach from 2016 even though the demand from the general public is still there.
The Senate Judiciary committee claimed last week that they were going to subpoena big tech companies that silenced the NY Post article that came out about Hunter Biden’s laptop. This turned out to be another dog whistle for conservatives desperate for answers to the years-long fight on conservatives being censored by big tech.
The Facebook insider said that a common practice is to “down-rank” conservative content. He said this makes it so “you can’t tell it’s censored,” but it still has the same effect of lowering the reach this content will have.
It is common for many big tech companies to hire outside of the United States for their programming needs, which gives foreign governments a way in the door to the machine that controls the Country’s virtual town square. Facebook has denied allegations that these foreign nationals, mostly from China, influence content censorship.
