The Los Angeles Public Library recently featured a male drag queen by the name of "Pickle" who read to area children to energize them over books "that explore progressive themes."

What are the details?

According to KABC-TV, Pickle, who has been working with Drag Queen Story Hour for at two years, says that children should be allowed to "see that you can be whoever you want any day of the week."

"We're really trying to get kids excited about books and excited about books that explore progressive themes, and allow children to see that you can be whoever you want any day of the week," he told the station during a recent interview. "A lot of the core values of being a drag queen — love, acceptance, joy, laughter, self-expression — are values that we want to instill in our kids."

Pickle pointed out that children are able to relate to him on a subconscious level even though he is a "larger than life character."

"It's opening up their ability to empathize with other people," he reasoned.
The program has brought much joy to area children, according to the library, which hopes to host another session of Drag Queen Story Hour in the coming months.

It's not even just about reading

In August, queens of Drag Queen Story Hour appeared at libraries in the U.K., where they taught children to twerk.

During an appearance at a library in Devon, England, a drag queen known as Mama G taught the children in the audience how to properly executive the provocative dance move.

"Does anybody in this room know how to twerk?" Mama G asked those children in the library. "All you need to do is you just need to stand with your feet sort of shoulder-width apart like so … and then you crouch down in this sort of position so you're bum's sticking out ... And then you just move your bum up and down like that. And that's twerking."

In July, an Oregon public library was forced to take down photos from its public Flickr account that featured young children lying on top of drag queens who were at the library for a Drag Queen Story Hour production.
