Shocking video footage has emerged of a violent altercation between mixed martial arts fighter B.J. Penn and another man, in which the former UFC champion appears to be knocked unconscious before being revived and pummeling the other combatant.
In a video shot outside a bar in Penn's native Hawaii, the decorated 40-year-old fighter can be seen grappling with a shirtless man in front of a pack of onlookers. Penn appeared to be handling the situation comfortably, easily absorbing a right hook to the face at one point before throwing the other man to the ground.
The shirtless man quickly rose to his feet and became entangled with Penn, who still did not appear to be in any danger.
Penn can even be heard yelling: 'Punch again, punch again.'
Only then did the shirtless man manage to pull his hands free of Penn's grasp before unloading two shots to the pro fighter's face, dropping him to the ground.

Security guards in red shirts can be seen trying to revive Penn while preventing the shirtless man from jumping on him while he was unconscious.
The shirtless man is then seen celebrating the knockdown, but the momentum of the fight was about to turn.

A second video obtained by TMZ shows Penn laying on top of the shirtless man and raining punches down upon him as security guards tried in vain to break up the melee. One woman can even be see stomping on the shirtless man's extremities that were poking out from underneath the scrum.
Later the shirtless man told TMZ that Penn knocked had knocked him down with a 'cheap shot.'
Meanwhile, an associate of Penn's claims the man had been trying to instigate a fight with Penn for some time.
A spokesperson for Penn did make a statement to TMZ: 'Upon meeting friends for a concert at the Lava Shack, words were exchanged between BJ and the acquaintance. From witness accounts, BJ tried multiple times to defuse the situation, but was hit repeatedly and knocked to the ground, as seen on the video.
'When he got back up he was disoriented, yet realized how serious the situation and threat was and felt there was a need to defend himself,' the statement continued. 'We are thankful that BJ nor the acquaintance were not seriously injured.'
Penn was not arrested or charged in connection with this altercation.
He was previously involved in a bar fight in Oahu in June, but also avoided arrest in that incident as well.
That was not the case in 2015, when Penn was charged with assault for another bar fight. However, those charges were dropped.
According to multiple reports, Penn's estranged girlfriend filed a restraining order against him in October due to years of sexual and physical abuse. The order was granted.
Penn is preparing to fight Nik Lentz on a yet-to-be-determined date, which could be the fighter's last appearance with the UFC, according to President Dana White.
