In California, at least, the leftist takeover of education is almost complete.
The state’s Department of Education — a “department of indoctrination,” more aptly — is seeking public comments on a radical ethnic studies curriculum that apparently aims to reduce the history of the United States to an unending pageant of “white supremacy,” “patriarchy” and various forms of “phobias” that would make a hypochondriac blush.
And that doesn’t even count not being able to spell “history” right.
As the introduction puts it, California’s latest attempt to permanently skew the worldview of the children unfortunate enough to be placed in its care for educational purposes has been decades in the making.
In answer to the question “Why Teach Ethnic Studies?” the first sentence says it all.
“As early as the 1970s, some California public high schools began offering Ethnic Studies, positing that courses in the field would provide an opportunity to engage the hxrstory, cultures, contributions, perspectives, and experiences of groups that have been overlooked, hxrstorically marginalized, and often subjected to invisibility within mainstream courses,” it says.
Get that? The word “history” is deliberately mangled to avoid the completely coincidental “his.” (The origins of the word have no connection to the masculine possessive in English.)
The people who are going to write textbooks for the nation’s most populous state have zero problems assaulting the English language for no reason whatsoever.
The California Department of Education is accepting public comments on the plan through Aug. 15.
Now, you might think that masterminds like that are the kinds of publicly funded bureaucrats who despise capitalism while making a fat, taxpayer-funded living off it. The kinds of people who have no problem believing that the American system is set up for “white supremacy.”
You would, of course, be absolutely right.
As William Evers, who served as assistant secretary of education during the George W. Bush presidency, put it in a Wall Street Journal commentary piece last week:
“Begin with economics. Capitalism is described as a ‘form of power and oppression,’ alongside ‘patriarchy,’ ‘racism,’ ‘white supremacy’ and ‘ableism.‘ Capitalism and capitalists appear as villains several times in the document.”
Of course, they’re villains. Because capitalism and capitalists are the single greatest reason humanity doesn’t live in the squalor of the Middle Ages. Capitalism and capitalists are the reason North America did not devolve into tiny fiefdoms mirroring the ancient tyrannies of Europe.
Capitalism and capitalists are the reason so much of the world lives in freedom today.
All of that makes them heroes of history, but villains in “hxrstory.”
Capitalism, capitalists and the U.S. Constitution are what every American citizen — including those benighted “educators” in California — have to thank for the fact that they are living, by any sane measure, in the greatest country that has ever existed.
And it’s the country they want to destroy – starting with the education of the young.
In a section titled “Developing an Ethnic Studies Pedagogy,” the California educrats open with a sentence that makes their intentions crystal clear – even if the language is a little misleading.
“Ethnic Studies teaching is grounded in the belief that education can be a tool for transformation, social change, and liberation,” the authors write.
In other words, transformation from the American way of life — the richest, freest, most successful way the world has ever known – into a social change pushed by the socialist forces that brought the country the administration of President Barack Obama.
That same social change would have brought on a President Hillary Clinton if a certain billionaire from New York hadn’t decided (to borrow a phrase from National Review) to stand athwart history and shout “stop.”
What the people behind this curriculum are definitely not pushing is “liberation” the way Americans understand the word — as in free people living free lives.
What they really want is an education system so viciously bigoted toward the culture that created the United States that it can’t even spell the word “history” honestly.
And it looks like they’re getting closer to getting it in California.
