Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo challenged American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten to a debate in an op-ed published Tuesday.

Pompeo wrote that he is “prepared to debate her [Weingarten] and to present to the American people my case for the risks she presents to our republic and our nation’s future” in a New York Post op-ed. He labeled Weingarten “the most dangerous person in America” and slammed her “focus on indoctrination over education.”

He slammed Weingarten for “the school lockdowns” she “helped engineer” and added that “interminable lockdowns and woke curricula led to the most significant decline in test marks since records have been kept.” Pompeo added that he believes America “cannot remain the world’s leading economic and political force if these results continue. If the United States should fail because of the deficits induced by Weingarten and those who enable her quest to change the nature of our country, the world will enter a phase dominated by tyrants.”

In an interview with Semafor last week, Pompeo first expressed his view that Weingarten is the most dangerous person in the world, more dangerous even than North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Chinese President Xi Jinping. The interview focused on his potential 2024 Republican presidential campaign, a subject he did not address in the op-ed.

The Nation’s Report Card for 2022 recorded the largest-ever drop in math scores among fourth and eight graders between 2019 and 2022, a press release from the National Assessment of Educational Progress confirmed.
