Liberals Threaten Manchin’s “Side Deal” Promised By Biden, Schumer And Pelosi

Dem Senator Joe Manchin agreed to support the Inflation Reduction Act in exchange for separate legislation that would grant some concessions to the fossil fuel industry.

Under the deal with Nancy Pelosi, Joe Biden and Chuck Schumer they promised “to pass comprehensive permitting reform legislation before the end of this fiscal year.”

Some Democrat lawmakers are now trying to break that promise.

The Hill reported:

Liberal lawmakers are pressing Democratic leaders in the House to not include a side deal undercutting environmental reviews worked out with Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) in a short-term measure funding the government.

House Natural Resources Chairman Raúl Grijalva (D-Ariz.) is circulating a letter asking leadership to separate the Manchin deal out from a continuing resolution that would temporarily avert a government shutdown.

“Don’t attach it to a budget, to a CR, must-pass legislation and therefore take this essential Republican agenda and have Democrats pass it,” he told The Hill earlier this month.

Manchin faced strong backlash in West Virginia after it was announced he would support the deal.

Fox News reported:

Manchin has faced sharp criticism, including from his West Virginia constituents, following his decision to support a scaled-back version of the massive Democrat-backed spending bill, officially labeled the Inflation Reduction Act, after announcing he would not support the original “Build Back Better” bill being pushed by the Biden administration.

Fox News Digital spoke with several Senate aides who detailed Manchin’s anxiety concerning the backlash. Each of the aides asked to remain anonymous over fear of retaliation and because of the sensitive nature of the negotiations surrounding the revamped legislation.

“He is clearly defensive in his TV interviews, and he’s getting blasted pretty hard in West Virginia,” one Senate committee staffer said, referring to multiple media appearances by Manchin in which he was sharply pressed over his shifting support.

Manchin warned lawmakers not to break their promise to him on the deal.

The Epoch Times reported:

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) is warning other members of his party not to back out of a compromise climate deal that helped Democrats pass the $700 billion Inflation Reduction Act.

“I’ve got the hard left right now saying, ‘Hell no, we’re not going to do anything now that makes it look like we’re helping Manchin,’” Manchin said. “I said, ‘You’re not helping me, you’re helping yourself if you want to get anything built in America.’”

Will Democrats betray Manchin?
