 First lady Jill Biden confirmed Monday that the Democrats have abandoned her promise of free community college in their negotiations to pass President Joe Biden's social spending bill.

Biden said she was "disappointed" in the development during a speech at the Community College National Legislative Summit in Washington, D.C.

"Congress hasn't passed the Build Back Better legislation yet. And free community college is no longer part of that package," she told the audience.

"We knew that this wasn't going to be easy. Joe always said that. Still, like you, I was disappointed. Because, like you, these aren't just bills or budgets to me, to you, right?" she continued.

"We know what they mean for real people, for our students," the first lady concluded. "And was a real lesson in human nature that some people just don't get that.

Government paid community college had been one of Jill Biden's key causes, but moderate centrist Democrats have prevented Democrats from passing all of the big spending policies they have promised.

The original "Build Back Better" spending bill included $45.5 billion budgeted for the states to pay for two years of community college for a period of five years.

Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia has specifically cited the enormous price tag of the proposed social spending when explaining why he refuses to go along with the Biden agenda. Many on the left have bitterly attacked Manchin for standing athwart their big spending schemes.

The first lady promised in Feb. 2021 that the Biden administration would make community college free for all Americans.

“We have to get this done. And we have to do it now," she said at the time. "That's why we're going to make sure that everyone has access to free community college and training programs."
