A Minnesota man being hunted by police over an attempted mugging on an 81-year-old woman has been turned into officers by his own mom.

Investigators had appealed for help tracking a suspect who was seen trying to rob an elderly victim at a Walgreens in the Como Park area of the city on December 23.

CCTV footage shows a man knocking an elderly woman down while allegedly trying to snatch her purse just inside the store's front door.

Officials said the woman suffered 'significant injuries' in the attack but was 'tough' and didn't give up her purse or the money inside.

Following an online appeal to track down the suspect, the mother of Isaiah Jamal Foster called police to tip off authorities to her son, a police spokesperson told Fox News.

It was reported Foster's mom recognized the coat in the CCTV footage as a gift from his grandmother.

She said he was wearing the coat when he left the house and told officers 'I’m 100 percent sure that is him.'

A criminal complaint adds: 'She does not trust police officers, but wanted to do the right thing. She prayed about it, and turned her son in. She loves her son, but did not raise him like that.'

Foster, 18, of Richfield, was already in Ramsey County Jail in connection with a carjacking of a woman and her young child on December 28 and so did not need to be found, St Paul Police said.

He has now been charged with first-degree aggravated robbery (attempted) and third-degree assault resulting in substantial bodily harm in connection with the attempted mugging.

Foster remains in jail.

In a statement, St Paul Police Department said: 'It started with a Facebook post asking for your help, led to a tip from a caring community member and ended with an arrest and charges.

'Thanks to you, our investigators were able to identify, locate and arrest the suspect in the attempted purse-snatching/attack on an 81-year-old woman Thursday, Dec. 23, at a Walgreens on Larpenteur Avenue.

'After our investigator received the tip, he easily tracked down Foster in the Ramsey County jail, where he's being held after deputies with the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office arrested him for his involvement in the carjacking of a woman and her young child on Osceola Avenue earlier this week.'

Ramsey County Attorney’s Office told Mercury News that possible charges for the carjacking remain under review.

Foster was arrested Tuesday along with a 17-year-old and a 14-year-old on suspicion of the armed carjacking of a St Paul woman in her garage in the Crocus Hill neighborhood, five miles away from the Walgreens store.

He was in jail when police received a call from his mom identifying him as the man in the video stills taken December 23 of the Walgreens assault.
