Joe Biden's disapproval rating hit a new low of 56 percent in a poll published on Tuesday, as enters the new year under fire for his handling of COVID and the economy.

The figure is the worst of his presidency and continues the downward trend of the past year.

It comes in the latest installment of a CNBC/Change Research survey, which found his disapproval rating started at 49 percent in April before rising to 54 percent in September, before hitting its new high among voters surveyed in December.

His approval rating has gone in the opposite direction. It now stands at 44 percent, down from 46 percent in September and 51 percent in April.

This week the White House has tried to head off the crises.

On Monday, Biden met with ranchers and farmers in an effort to tackle high food prices - a key part of the inflation woes faced by consumers - and on Tuesday he offered an update on the pandemic response, trying to reassure Americans that the nation was well-equipped to ride out the Omicron surge.

The new poll of 1,895 people found that 60 percent disapproved of Biden's handling of the economy - a six-point drop from September.

That number rises further to 72 percent disapproval when people were asked about his handling of the price of everyday goods.

And some 55 percent of respondents said they disapproved of Biden's management of the coronavirus pandemic - an area where the president once had an advantage over his Republican opponents.

The numbers will worry Democratic strategists as they prepare for November's midterm elections.

And they follow a string of similar polls suggesting that Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are unpopular after a year in power.

USA Today/Suffolk University poll taken December 27-30 showed only 40 per cent of registered voters approve of Biden's job as president while 54 per cent disapprove. The approval rating is a slight 2 per cent increase from the same poll taken in November, but is still a poor showing at this point in the presidency.

Harris' job approval rating is at 32 per cent, and while that is a terrible rating, it is a 4 per cent increase from the November poll where her approval was at only 28 per cent.

Biden's approval is the second lowest of any modern president at this point in his first term – with only the exception of former President Donald Trump. Around this point, Trump's average approval was somewhere around 38 per cent at the end of December 2017, according to a FiveThirtyEight tracker.

Of the 1,000 registered voters polled last month, 33 per cent say Biden is a strong leader while a whopping 62 per cent say that he is not a strong leader.

The USA Today/Suffolk poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.

The new lows come amid a massive nationwide surge in coronavirus cases with the spread of the highly contagious Omicron variant and economic woes resulting from spiked inflation and economic unrest in the pandemic.

A separate poll released Monday from CNBC/Change Research shows Biden's disapproval at an all time high with 56 per cent saying they do not approve of the job he is doing in office.

The poll was taken December 17-20 and shows a hike in disapproval from the same September poll showing 54 per cent and an April poll with the president's disapproval rating at 49 per cent.

This poll showed Biden's approval slightly higher than the USA Today poll with 44 per cent approval, down from 46 per cent in September and 51 per cent in April.

COVID concerns and economic unrest have fueled the continued decline in Biden and Harris' approval ratings.

And going into the 2022 midterms, Republicans are becoming increasingly confident they could regain a majority in at least one of the chambers of Congress – where there are razor thin margins.

As of Tuesday morning, more than 35,500 cases of coronavirus in the U.S. were made up of those who contracted the Omicron variant.

The daily case rate also reached an all time high when 1.08 million confirmed cases were reported by midnight on Tuesday morning, which makes the U.S. by far the hardest-hit nation in terms of COVID case rates.

On Monday morning, the U.S. reported 55,114,057 confirmed cases and by midnight the tally rose to 56,190,946.

Since the start of the pandemic, more than 56 million people were infected with coronavirus and 827,748 people have died from the virus as of Tuesday morning.

Biden and Harris are meeting with the White House COVID-19 Response Team on Tuesday afternoon and will speak with the press regarding the latest developments of the Omicron variant.

The president received a slew of backlash for getting away with first lady Jill Biden to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware during the biggest surge in cases ever since the start of the pandemic nearly two years ago.
