Joe Biden ignored the anniversary of the fall of the Soviet Union which occurred thirty years ago on December 25,1991. The anniversary fell as Russian President Vladimir Putin is threatening the former Soviet captive nation of Ukraine with invasion. There have been no statements from either the White House, State Department or Secretary Blinken on the anniversary of the greatest U.S. military and diplomatic triumph of the latter half of the Twentieth Century.

The anniversary would have been a perfect time to remind the world why nations did not want to be under Russian domination–then or now–and to explain why nearly all the former captive nations of eastern Europe have joined or like Ukraine are waiting to join NATO.

Remarks on the fall of the Soviet Union do not have to and should not mark a call to arms against Russia, but could be a use of the bully pulpit to discourage Russian aggression and conquest by reminding the world why Russian hegemony via the Soviet Union was rejected not just by the world but by the Russian people.

The Cold War against the Soviet Union was won by President Reagan’s peace through strength. President Trump employed peace through strength and kept Russia and Putin in check for the four years of his presidency. Under President George W. Bush, Putin forcibly took parts of Georgia. Under President Obama, Putin forcibly took parts of Ukraine and got militarily involved in Syria. Under Trump, Putin dared not take anything and did nothing when attacking Russian mercenaries were slaughtered by U.S. troops in Syria.

Now with Biden in office Putin is posturing to take more of Ukraine unless Biden agrees to his security demands that would essentially cripple NATO.
