A woman who was allegedly held at gunpoint in her own home alerted nearby shopkeepers by passing handwritten notes out the apartment window.
The 34-year-old woman was allegedly detained by Christopher Adam Duncan, 35, for more than an hour in their flat in Bonnyrigg, in Sydney's west, on Saturday night.
He was allegedly armed with a knife and a gun and assaulted her during the ordeal until she escaped about 7pm just as police arrived.
She was rescued after two shopkeepers saw the notes and started communicating with her through the window, before alerting police who smashed their way inside.

Cameras then show riot police walking down the street with a battering ram which they used to break into the house.
A woman can then be seen running out of the ground floor of the Bonnyrigg Avenue apartment building before later speaking to police.
The 34-year-old suffered several injuries while she was held captive, allegedly from assaults' by Duncan, whom she lived with in the flat.
She managed to free herself by the time police arrived, which enabled her to drop the notes to the shopkeepers below.
Duncan was arrested alongside two other women, aged 42 and 32, who were also in the home with the allegedly detained woman.

Police found a loaded gun inside the flat, and allegedly discovered precursor chemicals and equipment that is used to make meth.
The 35-year-old man was charged with 11 crimes including detaining person with intention to commit a serious indictable offence, and assault causing bodily harm.
There were no charges over the drug equipment allegedly found in the flat.
He was refused bail and will reappear at Fairfield Local Court on Wednesday.
The two women were released without charge. Police are continuing their investigations.
