Thousands of folks took a stroll through the South Bay’s beach cities on Sunday morning, Oct. 24 — and set a record while doing so.

The 13th annual Skechers Pier to Pier Friendship Walk returned Sunday after a one-year hiatus because of the coronavirus pandemic — organizers arranged virtual celebrity performances and local testimonials in 2020 instead — drawing some 17,000 people in-person and virtually for the 3.5-mile jaunt to raise money for children with special needs.

A year after the virtual event raised $1.8 million, organizers set the 2021 goal at a record-breaking $2.5 million — and surpassed it. The event raised more than $2.6 million.

The money goes to public schools’ education foundations, scholarships and the Friendship Foundation, a South Bay organization that supports children with special needs.

The annual event has participants walk from the Manhattan Beach Pier to the Hermosa Beach Pier and back.

The fundraiser — put on by Skechers, which is headquartered in Manhattan Beach, and with Kinecta Federal Credit Union as its presenting sponsor — also featured live performances and multiple celebrity appearances, including by boxing great Sugar Ray Leonard. More than 100 other companies joined Kinecta in sponsoring the event.

Organizers described Sunday’s walk as a success, noting that is was “great” to have the community come out in droves once again to support the Skechers Pier to Pier Friendship Walk.
