About 72,000 kids tested positive for the coronavirus last week in the U.S., according to a report from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children’s Hospital Association.

The organizations gathered data from 49 states, New York City, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and Guam.

The 72,000 cases last week are up from 39,000 COVID-19 cases reported among children the week before.

“A smaller subset of states reported on hospitalizations and mortality by age; the available data indicate that COVID-19-associated hospitalization and death is uncommon in children,” the report states.

The rate of deaths among children with COVID-19 was 0 to 0.26 percent in the states that reported the numbers, with seven states recording zero child deaths.

Throughout the pandemic up until July 29, almost 4.2 million children have tested positive for the coronavirus.

Along with reporting the numbers, the report said more needed to be done to investigate the long-term impact of COVID-19 on children.

“At this time, it appears that severe illness due to COVID-19 is uncommon among children. However, there is an urgent need to collect more data on longer-term impacts of the pandemic on children, including ways the virus may harm the long-term physical health of infected children, as well as its emotional and mental health effects,” according to the report.
