Video of the altercation was posted to social media on Sunday, showing the homeless man initially appearing to follow the officer's orders before abruptly turning around and attacking her.

The two tumble to the ground as the officer attempts to fight back against the man, but the officer ends up on the bottom as he lands on top of her.

Bystanders who witness the commotion rush to come to the officer's aid as she eventually pins him down.

Backup officers then help to place the homeless man into custody.

'On Friday, May 28, at the intersection of Kearny and Commercial, near Portsmouth Square, a homeless man was allegedly threatening Asians as they walked by, according to @sfstreets415,' the_asian_dawn's caption read.

'The hobo was then confronted by a female police officer. During questioning, the female police officer was attacked by the hobo. She was seriously injured during the attack and was assisted by four Good Samaritans who needed to pry the homeless man off her.'

'Multiple police officers responded to the scene almost immediately and took the assailant into custody. The female police officer was seriously injured and transported to the local hospital.'

Ken Fong, who witnessed the attack, told KTVU that he had seen two officers tell the homeless man to leave the Portsmouth Square area two hours before the assault.

'Even though he dropped her to the floor I'm happy she wasn't hurt majorly or injured because it could have been a lot worse,' Fong said.

'There were two teenagers that came up to them and said ''Hey, I don't feel safe because there's a suspicious guy hanging around our scooters,''' he said before adding that he believed the man was drunk.

San Francisco-area community activist Max Leong recognized the assailant in the video almost immediately, telling the news outlet that many residents in the area are familiar with him while adding that it also appears the man has mental health issues.

'He's been kind of a fixture here in San Francisco Chinatown,' Leong said. 'It speaks to the fact more services need to be provided for the mentally ill.'
