Donald Trump has told associates that he would back a Democratic candidate in Arizona's Senate race if Republican Governor Doug Ducey decided to run, according to a Monday report.

The former president is still holding a grudge against Ducey for refusing to overturn the 2020 election results in Arizona as he pushed claims of widespread voter fraud.

Two people familiar with Trump's private conversations told the Daily Beast that the former president would consider traveling to Arizona to campaign for Democratic Senator Mark Kelly.

Both sources, however, said they think Trump wasn't being totally serious.

One said the former president's political operation wouldn't be 'caught dead campaigning to keep the Senate more Democrat[ic].'

The comments, however, underline Trump's deep hatred of Ducey and desire to drive him out of the GOP.

Ducey was a Trump supporter and otherwise lined up on most issues, but isolated himself from the former president when he refused to back his voter fraud claims and move to overturn the election results in Arizona.

In recent days, Trump has zeroed in on Arizona, sending out multiple statements related to voter fraud and Ducey's unwillingness to give further weight to the allegations.

'The Republican Party is demanding that Governor Ducey of Arizona immediately provide large-scale security for the brave American Patriots doing the Forensic Audit of the 2020 Presidential Election,' Trump wrote in a Saturday statement from his Save America political action committee.

'Governor Ducey will be held fully responsible for the safety of those involved,' the former president continued. 'State police or National Guard must be immediately sent out for protection. The Democrats do not want to have this information revealed, and they will do anything to stop it.'

'Governor Ducey must finally act!'

Trump sent out three other statements on Friday and Saturday related to his election fraud allegations in Arizona.

'This could be Voter Fraud at the highest level. Don't think that Arizona is the only State. Much more to come!' Trump previewed in a Friday statement.

Trump lost Arizona by less than 11,000 votes, but so far no court has ruled in favor of the former president's claims of fraud.

Republicans insist the 2020 election was riddled with fraud due to the mass amounts of mail-in ballots and – in some cases – extended voter period in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. Some states extended the number of days they would accept mail-in ballots past November 3.

Ducey cannot run for a third term as governor in Arizona and it is unclear what the former Coldstone Creamery ice cream chain CEO plans to do next.

Earlier this year Ducey gave a confident '100% no' when asked if he was running for Senate. Despite that, there has been continued speculation in Arizona and Washington, D.C. that he would seek to continue his political career by running in 2022.

Rumors of a run were further pushed after Ducey met with Republican Senate Leader Mitch McConnell in D.C. during President Joe Biden's inauguration.

Winning back the Senate seat in Arizona is pertinent to Republicans taking back their majority in the upper chamber of Congress.

Kelly narrowly and surprisingly won the seat once held by the late Republican Senator John McCain in a special election against incumbent Republican Martha McSally.

McSally, a former representative for Arizona's 2nd district was appointed by Ducey to take McCain's Senate seat following his death in 2018.

In the special election, Kelly earned 51.2% of the vote to McSally's 48.8%.

So far in the 2022 Senate race, Kelly has recommitted to running for reelection and Republican Robert Paveza has also filed to run in the general election. There are no other official candidates so far.

When Kelly, an astronaut and husband of former Arizona Rep. Gabby Giffords, won his Senate seat in a 2020 special election.

This helped Democrats take the majority from Republicans – although with a 50-50 split, they only hold the Senate with Vice President Kamala Harris' tie-breaking vote.

Trump has not weighed in specifically on the Arizona Senate race.

Arizona Representative Andy Biggs, a Republican and staunch Trump ally, is said to be seriously considering a run.

Biggs is the chairman of the House Freedom Caucus and helped lead claims that the election was stolen.
