I never thought I’d have to type the phrase “rules for thee, but not for me!” so much over the past year, but once again another California Democrat seemingly believed that the state’s strict COVID-19 restrictions and rules didn’t apply to her.
According to the Washington Examiner, Contra Costa County District Attorney Diana Becton is facing sharp criticism this week after it was revealed that she hosted a wedding — yes, an actual wedding with dozens of guests– in her backyard, despite the state’s current rules.
The wedding was reportedly held at the beginning of August last year, right around the second peak of a surge in COVID-19 cases and in the middle of strict lockdowns all across the state.
Becton argues that her private wedding adhered by all of the restrictions at the time, which allowed outdoor-based religious and cultural ceremonies, but prohibited receptions, parties and any kind of party event that would bring together people from multiple households.
“I had a wedding in my yard that was really based upon the love that we shared,” Becton said after news of the wedding ceremony was revealed. “I hope that I did not do anything that was in violation of any rules. If I did, it certainly was not my intent,” she added, claiming she consulted with a “Coronavirus hotline” before hosting the event to make sure she was in the clear.
The classic, predictable response came next.
“I think the most important thing for people to know is that I did everything that I knew possible to obtain the best information,” Becton said.
In other words, it sounds like she utilized the old saying, “it’s better to ask for forgiveness later than beg for permission now.”
Her story began to fall apart, according to some of her neighbors. Becton claims the event lasted around four hours, in the afternoon, and included around 25-30 family members. Neighbors dispute the claim, claiming Becton and her guests partied well into the night.
One of her neighbors, Karyl Toms, was understandably upset at Becton’s blatant disregard for rules she was supposed to enforce as an elected official.
“That’s when I got really upset,” Toms said. “No surprise here, the poor suckers are locked down and people who have power get to do what they want. What, rules pertain to me?”
Making the situation even more ironic is the fact that prior to the backyard wedding bash, Becton’s office was responsible for following up on similar complaints from people tattling on their neighbors for having too many people over or having too much fun and not social distancing.
It sure is strange that all the reports we cover regarding similar situations all include elected Democrats. From House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Sen. Dianne Feinstein — the very people who will snap at others for not following the rules are very good at breaking them.
