Democrats seem as if they’re forever obsessed with targeting former President Donald Trump, even after he was acquitted for the second time in a sham Senate impeachment trial.
Their obsession was evidenced this week as, according to the Washington Examiner, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi renewed a push to form a “9/11 style commission” to investigate the events leading up to the Jan. 6 Capitol riots, which Democrats believe was almost exclusively Trump’s fault.
The timing of her call for a special commission is exceptionally convenient, as it comes right around the same time that a growing number of House Republicans are wondering precisely what role she played in the multiple security failures that happened at the Capitol — the building she’s in charge of — on that tragic day in American history.
“It is clear from his findings and from the impeachment trial that we must get to the truth of how this happened. To protect our security, our security, our security, [sic] our next step will be to establish an outside, independent 9/11-type Commission,” Pelosi wrote in a statement to fellow members of Congress.
She added that the primary goal of such a commission would be to “investigate and report on the facts and causes relating to the January 6, 2021 domestic terrorist attack upon the United States Capitol Complex … including facts and causes relating to the preparedness and response of the United States Capitol Police and other Federal, State, and local law enforcement in the National Capitol Region.”
Pelosi’s call for the investigation echoes her original idea that she brought up last month.
While Pelosi has already garnered some level of bipartisan support for the idea, it’s not a very popular topic among American citizens. A quick glance through social media reveals that many believe such a commission is not only a waste of time — time that could be spent helping Americans through a pandemic — but also a massive waste of taxpayer money.
And they’re mostly right. While the events that took place on Jan. 6 were horrific and will live as a stain on American history, in no way, shape or form does it compare to the events that rocked this nation to its core on Sep. 11, 2001.
On Monday, it was reported that a number of House Republicans, including Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, published a letter to Pelosi’s office in which he and other Republicans demanded to know exactly what happened on her watch that day with regard to failed security measures.
“It has been widely reported and confirmed by multiple sources that when Chief [Steven] Sund requested the National Guard be activated ahead of the January 6th Joint Session of Congress, the response from the [sergeant at arms], acting on your behalf, was that the ‘optics’ of having the National Guard on-site were not good and the intelligence didn’t support the move,” the GOP lawmakers wrote.
Only time will tell, but Pelosi could soon be in hot water if it’s revealed that her lack of action — because of “optics” — allowed deadly chaos to ensue.
