A California father has been charged with the murder of his wife and 11-year-old daughter after walking into a police department and telling a record clerk that he killed his spouse.

Officers with the Sunnyvale Police Department said in a Thursday release that Leonid Solomonovich Yamburg, 51, walked into the Sunnyvale DPS headquarters at around 2.30pm on January 20 to report the murder.

He was immediately detained at the headquarters while police went to his residence to conduct a wellness check.

Officers responded to Yamburh's home on the 900 block of West Homestead Road. Upon entering, police found the man wife - Svetlana Nikitina - and the couple's young daughter dead.

During a press conference, DPS Captain Craig Anderson shared that while Nikitina had been found in a garage, the 11-year-old was found in one of the home's bathrooms.

Anderson also shared that following his arrest, Yamburg declined to be interviewed and invoked his right to an attorney.

'This is just a horrific tragedy,' Anderson said. 'Our hearts are broken for the family, for the victims and for all of their friends.'

The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner is currently trying to determine a cause of death.

Anderson added: 'These incidents are all tragic incidents, but especially when it involves a kid. Most of us all have kids of our own.'
